Elizabeth D. Muckley

Dr. Elizabeth Draper Muckley is the Director of Optometric Services at Northeast Ohio Eye Surgeons where she has practiced for over 20 years. She concentrates on the management of medical glaucoma, dry eye, corneal disease, and post-operative surgical care.

Education

She attended The Ohio State University for undergraduate studies as well as Optometry School. Upon graduating, Dr. Muckley pursued a residency in ocular disease at Ohio Eye Alliance. A nationally recognized leader in the profession of optometry, Dr. Muckley was President of the Ohio Optometric Association in 2020, and subsequently served on the OOA Board of Directors for 9 years. During her Presidency at the OOA, she helped lead Ohio optometry through the COVID19 pandemic and worked with the Governor’s office on restart recommendations, as well as volunteered with the Ohio Medical Reserve Corp in administrating the COVID 19 vaccine to the public. She also served as past Legislative Chair, where she was instrumental in the passage of 3 Ohio Laws including scope of practice expansion.

Career

Dr. Muckley’s passion for managing glaucoma led her to be the 2nd female optometrist to be accepted in the International Optometric Glaucoma Society. Elizabeth Muckley also is a member of the American Optometric Association and serves on the Research and Information Committee. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Optometry, where she is a member of the Governance Task Force. She is a past Chair of the Academy Nominating Committee, and also served on the Research Committee.

Dr. Muckley has received many career awards for her service to the profession and patient care. She was recognized as the 2019 Outstanding Alumni for Marlington High School. She was also named by the OSU College of Optometry as one of their 100 Notable Alumni. In 2007, she was awarded as the Ohio Young Optometrist of the Year, and was then recognized nationally in 2008 as the American Optometric Association’s Young Optometrist of the Year. In 2021, she also received the honor of being named the Ohio Optometrist of the Year by the Ohio Optometric Association.

Dr. Muckley has lectured extensively, both locally as well as nationally, on the treatment and management of ocular disease. Elizabeth Muckley also has contributed articles to medical journals and mainstream ocular publications. She is currently authoring a chapter for an optometric educational textbook to be published in late 2022 on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of glaucoma. She is the Education Chair of the East-West Eye Conference and is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Optometry at the Ohio State College of Optometry and is a chief preceptor to 4th-year optometry externs.

Lifestyle

Dr. Muckley enjoys spending time on Lake Erie and traveling overseas with her husband, Tim, and son, Max. In what free time she has left, she gardens and maintains a small fruit orchard. She also is proud of her Italian heritage and preserves those cultural traditions through food and family.
